Motivation and Goal Setting made Easy

What is motivation?  How does one attain long term motivation to allow you to follow through on the simple process of having first the idea, then taking all the necessary steps to bring this idea to fruition/completion.  How many times have you made decisions to firmly change the areas in your life that simply are not working, only to find your good intentions go out the door in a short span of time?

Through certain life affirming techniques, goal setting is made easy, these techniques enable you to start living the life you have always dreamed of having.

Get yourself a journal specifically for your goals and aspirations and give the steps below a shot, see if you can’t just change those things that aren’t working for you.

Firstly, you need to identify the areas of your life you are unhappy with, whether it is your career, family life, finances, health and fitness, home, car, furnishings, quality of free time, whatever makes you sigh and want to head to the nearest pub when you think about it needs to be looked at.  The most important process in healthy goal setting is 100% self honesty, as with anything a lukewarm attempt will bring about a lukewarm result.

Secondly once the problem areas have been identified, ask yourself what you really want to experience in those areas.  For example if your career is an issue, and you are unhappy with your current situation, finding you are working only because of financial and family commitments, rather than truly enjoying and being passionate for what you do. Then ask yourself what your dream career is?  Ask yourself what steps you need to do to get into this chosen profession?  Do you need to set aside some time for night classes?  Do you need to approach your current employer and ask for further training to attain a higher position?  Do you need to remove some unnecessary habits to make the time for these changes?

One of the most common complaints I hear is, “Yes this is what I want to do, BUT there is not enough time, or the kids are still in school”  honestly I have heard all the reasons you could come up with, time and children being the main two.  All these are very valid points and as a single working mother I have also been faced with these issues.  I struggled for many years before finally I remembered one small thing my father had always told me, PMA (Positive Mental Attitude), so I made time and through these steps changed my career and my life.

Once you have written exactly what you want to have happen and the steps that are required for you to achieve these changes, you then once again have to be 100% honest about the reasons why you feel you cannot and have not yet followed your dream and attained the life you wish to have.   Some of the following are common fears people have that create blockages that lead to unfulfilled dreams.  Procrastination, this comes from fear and indecision, also one of my favourites because I have never had one client that does not suffer from this, in one form or another.  This can be due to Feeling too old to make changes, fear of failure, fear of abandonment, fear of ridicule or disapproval, distrusting whether you can accomplish what you set out to do, fearing change.  Whatever negative thoughts pop up regarding the changes you wish to make, it is important to observe and notice them but do not judge them.  Fears are normal.  However removing fear is both a healthy and attainable goal, when fear is removed all things are possible.

Thirdly, now that you have identified the problem areas and allowed yourself on paper at least to state what you truly wish to manifest, its time to take control of your schedule to enable these goals to be fulfilled.  Know the value of your time, Make a daily time list, list all your activities and the time involved, see where your time goes each day, ask yourself if there are time wasting activities you could eliminate from your life, hence making more time to focus on the changes you wish to make.  After a couple of weeks of doing this you will be quite surprised at where you will be able to find time.  Change the way you do your daily list once time management is established.  Instead of documenting the day as you go.  Wake up and write a list of what you wish to achieve in that day and tick it off as you complete the task.  This list could consist of a couple of steps required to attain the life you wish to lead as well as your daily routine.  Before you know it you will be in that new career with a very focused happy disposition.

Break down your goal into little steps, do one step a day, and write down a realistic schedule to achieve.  Don’t worry about how you will attain your goal, just focus on one step today towards accomplishment.

The other two methods we recommend, and have our clients do in conjunction with the above, is one creative visualization, and two positive affirmations.  For the visualization close your eyes and simply see, know and feel  that you already have accomplished this goal, see all the steps you have taken to get there, and feel the pride and satisfaction of achieving what you set out to do.  Some positive affirmations are also very beneficial as this helps program negatives into positives.  Think of your head as a computer we are just slipping in a new disk to over-ride the one that is no longer working for your highest good.   You could try some of the following or indeed one of your own:

  • I laugh, have fun, and delight in the dreams I have built during this lifetime.
  • I now achieve with ease all goals I set myself.
  • I affirm that I have enough time to achieve all I set out to do.

In conclusion motivation is a necessity to achieve that happy, balanced life we all dream of having.  Now you know for sure you can, don’t take my word for it, get that journal, put pen to paper and my friends start your journey to your perfect life!!!!
